Savina Ioannou is a Cypriot-Canadian visual artist and art therapist based in Toronto, Canada. She has received her BFA in Drawing and Painting from the Ontario College of Art and Design (OCADU, 2013) and an Art Therapy Certification from the Toronto Art Therapy Institute (2020) with her thesis titled “Journey: An Expressive Arts Therapy Program for Refugee Adolescents in host communities”. Ioannou has exhibited her work as part of group exhibitions in Canada and in Cyprus.
Savina’s creative practice is an exploration of themes on migration, vulnerability and resilience through medium, personal history and narrative. Time and self-reflection have given each medium she uses their own symbolic meaning; depicting fragments of her inner world and the effect of surrounding environments to the psyche. As she has been using art-making primarily for therapeutic expression, Ioannou’s practices of stained glass and mixed media generate a dialogue between them, where each medium responds to the other in order to create a sense of balance and harmony.
